     The Canal Street Line traces its origins to horse-drawn streetcar service dating back to June 1861. In the early 1930’s the streetcars became electric powered. From 1934 to 1950, there were two electric streetcar lines running on Canal Street: the West-End Streetcars and the Cemeteries Streetcars.
      Cars marked West End operated from the foot of Canal to the outer end of the street at the cemeteries, then turned left onto City Park Ave. (Metairie Road). It then turned north onto New Basin Canal (which is today called West-End Boulevard) continuing to the West End Amusement Area on Lake Pontchartrain.
      Note: That amusement area is today called West-End Park and should not be confused with Pontchartrain Beach, which was located at the end of Elysian Fields Ave.
      The West End line was converted to buses in 1950.
Based on research by the artist, this fantasy scene depicts the West End streetcar as it looked in 1942, the year of the artist’s birth. Note the presence of well-known shopper’s landmarks such as Godchaux’s and Holmes, as well as a horse-drawn carriage, a 1942 Plymouth Super Deluxe, and a historically accurate, fashionable crowd milling about during Mardi Gras Season on Canal Street.
      This fantasy depiction was researched, designed, and painted from Public Domain Photographs, by the artist in February 2011. The style of the painting pays homage to early French Romanticism.

The Place: The Artist, Dan Junot, nicknamed these picturesque marshlands on the north side of Louisiana Highway #1 -- just before the Leeville Bridge leading to Grand Isle -- the “Mardi Gras Marshes” because of their consonance with the Fat Tuesday “Trinity of Colors”: the purple casts of the waters, the golden hue of the grasses, and the green shade of the bushes and shrubs. Further illustrative of Mardi Gras are the “floats” of the wetlands – called “flottants” by the Cajun French.

as part of a juried art exhibition Art Melt (July 16th through August 28th 2010).
